LGBT+ History Month is celebrated in February in the UK. Each year, The Proud Trust produces a resource and education pack for LGBT+ History Month, linked to a curriculum area.

The activities in these packs are aimed at KS3/4 and can be used as part of lessons or tutor times, often forming part of LGBT+ History Month displays! We’ve seen many of the activities work well with KS2 students in Rainbow Flag Award schools too.

LGBT+ History Month 2023 – Behind the Lens

LGBT+ young people exist in every space where young people are, including classrooms. This year’s theme “Behind the Lens” gives us a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the lives and professional accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, many of who work outside of the limelight in the fields of photography, film making, TV, music and fashion.

The sessions are:

LGBT+ History Month 2022 – The Arc is Long

The theme of 2022’s LGBT+ History Month was “The Arc is Long”, from a Martin Luther King quote, exploring art, media, and politics. This theme allows us to to explore ideas of social justice, and the changing attitudes towards LGBT+ people.

LGBT+ History Month 2021 – Body, Mind, Spirit (PSHE)

The theme this year of Body, Mind and Spirit has provided much opportunity to explore the complexities of who we are and what we can aspire to be. There is even a chance for young people to design the LGBT+ History Month logo and badge for 2022, taking their own place in LGBT+ history! You can also find versions of each session, written into lesson format, with PowerPoints in The Classroom.

 LGBT+ History Month 2020 – Poetry, Prose and Plays (English)

In 2020, the whole of LGBT+ History Month was been dedicated to Lyra McKee, the journalist and LGBT+ activist who was shot dead during rioting in Northern Ireland in 2019. Sara Canning, Lyra’s partner at the time of her death, for writing the foreword to the 2020 pack.

LGBT+ History Month 2019 – Peace, Reconciliation and Activism (History)

The 2019 theme was of such great importance, enabling an exploration of LGBT+ activism in the year that marked 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in LGBT+ rights and history. Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, founder of UK Black Pride, kindly write the thought provoking foreword.

Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey, co-founder of Harvey Milk Foundation and international LGBT rights campaigner, contributed to the 2018 pack, by writing the foreword.
